Welcome to

Gary Davison Music

American composer Gary Davison received early training in piano from Wesley Howl in Tulsa, OK, and then organ lessons with Philip Baker in Dallas, TX.  He graduated as a Dean’s Scholar from Boston University (MusM and MusB, magna cum laude) where his tutelage in organ and related disciplines was with Professor and University Organist & Choirmaster, Dr Max Miller, and concentrated studies in theory and composition with Professor and Department Chair, Dr Marjorie Merryman. A recipient of the Associate Certificate from the American Guild of Organists (AAGO), Mr Davison is also an inductee of Pi Kappa Lambda, the National Music Honor Society. His career has been primarily on the East Coast of the US, especially in the Washington, DC area.

Through the lens of the post-modern era, Mr Davison’s artistry is imbued with many of the modal and tonal techniques of Western music. Performers and audiences alike favorably regard his compositional style for its idiomatic expression and freshness of voice.  Critical acclaim supports this regard with such descriptions of his work as “persuasive … imaginative and polished … sumptuous and engaging” (The Washington Post); “seductive and spirited … smooth, flexible and clear” (Hamburger Abendblatt, Germany); “breathtaking and exquisite … exactly the kind of rewarding challenge singers love best.” (The Journal of the Association of Anglican Musicians); “glowing harmonies and graceful melodies ... burgeons thrillingly ... much substantial music on this disc” (BBC Music Magazine); “there is an uncluttered, harmonic appeal to his writing ... imaginative [and] stunning” (Choir and Organ); and hauntingly beautiful ... an almost glassy and ethereal sense to the words” (The Sydney Organ Journal).

Two recordings of his choral and organ music are available with Matthew Owens directing the Wells Cathedral Choir: “The Armour of Light” (Regent Records), and “Awake, My Soul” (Resonus Classics).  A third album dedicated solely to Mr Davison’s music is a volume in the New American Choral Series (Gothic Records) recorded in Washington National Cathedral by their resident professional choir, Cathedra, and the Girl Choristers of WNC, both under the direction of Canon Mike McCarthy.
